Deer in my Garden
8:22 PM
They've done much, much less damage to the flower gardens. I have seen Mama Doe happily nipping off the hollyhock flowers and buds, and while they have sampled the cosmos, it is quite a list of what they leave alone: the daffodils and irises in the spring, of course, but have also steadfastly ignored the multi-coloured zinnias, white alyssum, the California poppies, the various salvias and sages in purple, pink, red and, my favourite, white and red like candy canes. They've not touched the glorious black eyed Susans, the fairy flowered columbine, the foxglove with their cathedral spires, the lavender nor the wild impatiens aptly called The Poor Man's Orchid.
Sitting on the front porch, we watch Mama Doe explore, nibbling on the wild plums. And watching her bring out her spindly legged twins to test their legs is bound to have even the most dedicated gardener sigh with pleasure.
The most breathless moments though, are winter dawn mornings, where the deer are in sharp contrast with the pure white snow. Watching them roam about in plain sight.... wary but calm, taking their time as they cross our field of view.
Seems we can share and live in peace. No, I'll not be giving the deer up: I can visit the farmers market to get garden tomatoes if they are truly that hungry.
